A Message from the Eastern District Director Frank Fiato
How many times have firefighters entered a smoke filled home, only to be frustrated by piles of papers, magazines, tables
full of boxes and clothing? Too many.Besides all of these items adding to a fire load, hoarding also prevents us from doing
what we need to, locating a person and saving their life. Or possibly costing us ours. There is nothing more frustrating
or sadder to a fire fighter than knowing we couldn't save someone due to hoarding. This is not something firefighters, police,
the building inspector or the family can do alone to correct. It takes teamwork, along with mental health professionals to
correct the issue. If you know of a hoarding situation, contact your local mental health professionals, local building inspector,
the person's family.
On another note, when using cleaners, please keep them in their original containers. Some chemicals , when mixed, can
have a dangerous outcome. Possibly even toxic fumes. Read the labels, and never ever store them in an unmarked container.
Report from Eastern Director; Since our last meeting, I have attended fire service council meetings. I have the minutes of their last
meeting . I have copies of bills proposed in the Assembly and Senate. There is little hope of the insurance bill for fireman
on home insurance. This year in April, our company is again participating Inrecruit New York. The next fire council meeting
is March 26. Tom and I will try to make it. I hope everyone can attend Pub Ed in May. About the booth at Turning Stone, we
need help. Lisa wont be able to spend all the time she has spent in the past . Are there any handouts left? If my term is
up this year, I would like to run again.
